Showing Up is What Counts

I’ll let you in on a secret: public speaking terrifies me. Despite years in executive leadership and even serving as a Columbia Toastmasters president, the introvert in me still struggles every time I step up to the mic. But advocacy isn’t about being a perfect orator; it’s about your very important voice.

On March 17th, we testified on three critical housing bills before the County Council. In my testimony, I stumbled. I didn't feel "polished." But I showed up, and that’s really what counts.

This week, during a Horizon Foundation Housing Advocacy cohort meeting, a colleague shared a vital "a-ha" moment: elected officials care most about the number of people standing for an issue. Whether you speak at a podium, send a quick email, make a call, or leave a voicemail, your voice carries weight.

Right now, housing is often left out of the conversation at community forums and listening sessions. To end homelessness and keep our neighbors stably housed, we have to change that.

I’ve been passionate about ending homelessness since high school, yet I still have to fight the urge to stay quiet. I’m asking you to join me in stretching those "advocacy muscles." Your voice provides the momentum we need to ensure everyone in our community has a place to call home.

I hope this year you’ll speak up about what matters to you, with local, state, and federal representatives, and with your vote.

The HoCo Home Share program connects homeowners who have a room to spare with local residents seeking housing, creating mutually beneficial living arrangements. The program expands Howard County's housing options, often at below-market rates, while giving homeowners added financial stability and, when desired, social connection or practical support.

Bookkeeper (PT): The Bookkeeper serves the mission of Bridges to Housing Stability, Inc. (Bridges) with numerous daily financial activities. The primary work includes but is not limited to processing invoices (bill entry and check processing), recording credit card transactions, and recording bank deposits, in a timely manner (using Sage Intacct). The Bookkeeper also helps with reconciliations, grant reporting and preparation for the annual audit.
